- Nalina was born in 1989 to a single mother Sheila Shapiro.
- Parents : At the time of her birth, her mother was in the process of divorcing her father.
- She has said that her father is a German that her mother married after meeting while travelling in Europe. The marriage reportedly only lasted 3 years.

- A bright girl from a young age, Nalina received a partial scholarship to study at the Franklin Pierce University in New Hampshire.
- At the time, she was considering other universities, until she saw a Franklin brochure which contained a horse on the front. Nalini loved horses and considered that a good luck sign.
- She graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor of Communications and a major in Journalism.

- After her graduation, Nalina sent out over a hundred video resumes to land herself an on-air job. This led to her receiving a reporter role for an afternoon program in Buffalo.
- The role was with the WIVB network, which was back then known as the Lin TV Corporation.
- Since beginning there in 2010, she has worked her way up to being a lead weekday anchor for their 5.30pm & 10pm news programs.

- Despite being raised by a Jewish mother & grandmother, she considers herself a relaxed Christian.
- She grew up initially wanting to be in involved with horses. She was a competitive equestrian as a teenager & worked for the Saratoga Springs Horse Farm mucking stalls and exercising horses in order to pay for her travel to competitions.
- Her other job was as a waitress in a café, and she has said that it was hearing peoples stories during that time that started her love of journalism.
