Holiday was born in 1964 to a mother who was a schoolteacher and a father who was attending dental school. After he graduated, he joined the Army and was stationed at Kuma Station in Japan.
As a child, she bounced around various bases in Asia, including Hong Kong and Thailand.
In 1970, her brother was born, and in 1971, her family returned to the United States.

She graduated from the university with a master’s in fine arts.

In 1999, she went to Wisconsin for a fiction fellowship. Fellowship programs pay writers a stipend so that they can focus on their book, usually in anticipation that the book will become a success.
During her time in Wisconsin, she wrote little fiction.
