- After high school, Laura took a job as a 3rd-grade maths teacher. Although she enjoyed teaching, she wasn’t passionate about it and didn’t like her job.
- While teaching, she met fellow bandmate, Mark Speer through mutual friends, and the two connected over their love for Middle Eastern architecture and Afghan music.
- Realizing that she enjoyed music more than teaching, Laura started learning how to play bass in 2009 and six months later, she was playing like a professional.
- Mark Speer, who was then part of a band called Yppah, encouraged her to audition for a gig playing bass for musician, Bonobo on his tour.
- Lee landed the job and in 2010, she joined Mark and his band Yppah on Bonobo’s tour.
- Motivated by the success of their tour, Laura quit teaching for good and she, Mark and drummer, Donald Ray Johnson Jr. decided to form Khruangbin.
- Shortly before forming the band, Lee and Speer spent some time in a barn in Burton, Texas creating the unique sound that their music has become famous for. The band’s name means “airplane” in Thai and it was Laura’s idea to name it that.
- The barn is currently their go-to location for recording a lot of their music.
- Khruangbin has toured with Bonobo and released 3 albums titled The Universe Smiles Upon You, Con Todo el Mundo and Mordechai. Their 3rd album was released on June 26, 2020.
