Personal Life : Parents, Family and Education

Frank Buckley was born on February 9, 1964, at the Bethesda Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland, to Billy Joe Buckley (father) and Toshiko Buckley (née Kaneko, mother). Frank’s dad was a hospital corpsman in the US Navy who met the woman who would become his wife while on a posting in Yokosuka, Japan.
The first two years of Frank’s life were spent in Washington, D. C., where his father had a role in the US Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED).
In 1966, Frank headed to Japan with his parents. His father had been assigned to the USS Mars, which had its posting off the coast of Vietnam.

In 1969, he returned to the United States, settling with his family on the Sand Point Naval Air Station in Seattle, Washington.
By 1973, Frank had forgotten how to speak Japanese, and his father had received another posting there!
In 1976, the family returned once again to the United States, this time settling in 29 Palms, California. Frank attended high school there.

Frank was influenced by his parents’ hard work in establishing a college fund for him despite never going to university themselves.
He first attended first the California State Polytechnic University in Pomona, California, and then the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles. He graduated from USC in 1987 with a double major in Broadcast Journalism and history.
Frank is married to Elena Pearce Buckley, and together they have two sons – Ben Buckley and Sebastian Buckley. Elena and Frank celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary in May 2023.

Frank worked as an intern for newspapers The Detroit News and The L.A. Times while he was in college.

Following his graduation, he worked in the world of television news in Palm Springs and North Carolina, then at KCAL 9 back in Los Angeles.
Frank then became part of the CNN team as a national correspondent based in Los Angeles. While there, he spent time on the supercarrier USS Constellation of the US Navy while it was based on the Persian Gulf during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He also traveled with several political campaigns, such as those of John Kerry and John Edwards.
In June 2005, Buckley joined KTLA, where he became the co-anchor of the Emmy-winning KTLA Morning News.
