A proud Houstonian, Melanie is committed to helping and representing her community as much as she conceivably can, attempting to report the issues in her locale and across the United States as effectively as possible.

Personal Life, Parents and Family Details :

Melanie’s birthday falls on March 10th, and she was born and raised in Houston, alongside her three other siblings – Cheryl Lawson, Eric Lawson, and Roxanne Lawson.
Her parents’ names are Bill (father) and Audrey Lawson (mother). Bill is a legendary Houston Pastor who celebrated his 90th birthday in 2018. Audrey was also a formidable community activist and, along with her husband, had founded the Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church. Audrey passed away in 2015, at the age of 83.

With such a pro-community upbringing, Melanie was always destined to follow in the footsteps of her parents in wanting to serve the area she is so proud to originate from.
Melanie still lives in Houston with her husband and children, and as a Multiple Sclerosis sufferer in later life, has become a keen campaigner for the disorder.

Melanie is very proud to be a product of the Houston Education system and has been an active member of her parent’s church since childhood.
She spent her college days getting a Politics degree at Princeton and later studying Law and Journalism at Columbia University.

Work & Job as a Reporter :

Melanie began her career with admittance to both the Texas and New York State bars and worked for a Wall Street law firm for three years after graduation.
Currently, she is working as a reporter and anchor for Channel 13. Melanie can be seen as a co-anchor on Channel 13’s ‘Live at 5,’ ‘The Midday Show’ and ‘Eyewitness: Live at 11’, as well as hosting her own weekly current affairs show named ‘Crossroads.’
Melanie has won numerous awards for her work in journalism, including an Emmy for her coverage of President Clinton’s trip to South Africa.

She has also been honored as the YWCA’s “Outstanding Woman of the Year,” a “Women of Distinction” by the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, and the Ben and Julie Rogers Ecumenism Award from the Anti-Defamation League.

Melanie’s involvement in the Houston community is far-reaching. She is on the board of numerous community organizations, including the Houston Ballet, SHAPE Community Centre, The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Volunteer Houston & The Houston Association of Black Journalists.
She also belongs to The Houston (TX) Chapter of The Links, Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, and the American Leadership Forum.
