  • Syan grew up in Sunnyside, Third Ward, an area of Houston, Texas. Sunnyside was once named as the sixth-most dangerous neighborhood in America.
  • She attended Houston’s Dodson Montessori Magnet School, then went to T.H. Rogers Middle School. As a middle school student, she picked up “All The President’s Men” from her parents’ bookshelf and became awestruck by the important and powerful work of journalism.
  • While at Episcopal High School in Bellaire (Class of 1995), Syan had a goal of taking a course with advocacy professor David Protess at Northwestern; however, she had no idea of the “dream result” which would launch her into a role of an investigative reporter.

  • She worked with Andrew M. Hale & Associates Law Firm while a student at Northwestern.

Career : The Early Days

  • During her childhood, Syan watched television news a lot. Bill and Dominique, Houston’s renowned television news professionals, were huge inspirations for her.
  • To kickstart her journalism journey, Syan had a three-month internship at KSNT in Kansas. She then started her career as an investigative reporter in Tyler, Texas, at NBC.
  • Then in 2001, moving to Knoxville, Tennessee, as a weekend morning anchor, Rhodes moved to Memphis as a general reporter and weekend anchor.
  • Amid some minor controversy, she left Memphis for Orlando and spent six years as part of the Florida WESH weekday morning news team, and eventually on WKCF as 10 pm weeknight news anchor.

  6. Hello Ms Syan, I think you are an attractive individual. Your portfolio is very impressive. My thought of you is that I wish you were more African-American in your hair. Wigs are nice, but being natural would set an example for young African-American girls to want to be proud to what the Creator has given them. Our naturalness gives us an unique advantage over all classifications of people.
