Carl Apfel was born on August 4, 1914, in Bronx, New York City. He was the son of parents, Harry Apfel (father) and Lena Apfel (mother), and had a brother named Bezalel Apfel.

Carl met Iris in 1947 at a resort on Lake George in upstate New York. They tied the knot the following year, on February 22, 1948. Their genuine love and affection were evident in their long-lasting marriage, which lasted over 7 decades. Iris and Carl decided not to have children, dedicating their lives to their unconventional business and frequent travels around the globe.
Together, in 1950, Carl and Iris founded Old World Weavers, a renowned interior design firm and textile company.
On August 1, 2015, Carl passed away peacefully at his home in Palm Beach, Florida at the age of 100, just days before his 101st birthday. The reason for his death was congestive heart failure.
