Jim Threapleton (Pronounced: Jim Threppleton) is an English filmmaker and painter who is best known for his film ‘Extraordinary Rendition’ and his work as an assistant director in other movies like The Mummy (1999), Hideous Kinky (1998) and The Governess (1998).
He has also been in the news as the first husband (now divorced) of actress Kate Winslet. He was born in Wharfedale, Yorkshire, England.

Personal Life, Parents and Family Details :

Jim Threapleton was born as James Edward Threapleton in the Wharfedale area of Yorkshire England. His father was a RAF pilot. Jim has a younger brother named Robin Threapleton who joined the armed forces.
On account of his father’s job, the brothers spent their childhood in different cities before they were admitted to a boarding school in Yorkshire.

For his education, he completed his BA in History of Art, Manchester University in 1995.
He describes his family as one steeped in the principle of public service and hence the professions chosen by his father and brother. As young boys, Jim and Robin used to have regular and wide-ranging political debates during family time. This interest in politics was what drew him to the subject used in his film ‘Extraordinary Rendition.’

Career and Rise to Fame :

Jim’s first job was as a production runner on the television drama London’s Burning. From there he quickly rose up the ranks and worked as the third assistant director on the megahit Hollywood movie ‘The Mummy.’
He met actress Kate Winslet on the sets of the movie ‘Hideous Kinky’ where he was working as the third assistant director. His first brush with the newspapers was as the lesser-known husband of the actress Kate Winslet.
In 2007, he won critical acclaim for his film ‘Extraordinary Rendition’ alongwith producer Andy Noble, which was described as a ‘no budget film’ as it was shot at an extraordinary budget of less than £20,000.

The film received recognition for the handling of its content as well as the direction, and has been to many well-known international film festivals. In 2008, it was nominated for the British Independent Film Awards and was in competition at the Locarno and Edinburgh International Film Festivals.
Currently, Jim teaches at the University of Art in London where he also recently received his doctorate in fine art.

Personal Life :

Jim met actress Kate Winslet on the sets of the movie Hideous Kinky and were married a year later in Winslet’s hometown Reading. They have a daughter Mia who is now 17 years old. The couple divorced soon after Mia was born with Kate citing Jim’s ‘unreasonable behaviour’ as the grounds for divorce.
Jim’s reticence in talking about the relationship led him to be painted as a colourful character by many British tabloids, many of which were later sued by him.
He visits his daughter Mia once a month in the USA, whom he describes as the ‘most confident little girl he ever met.’

Jim met & married his second wife Julie Vuorinen, a school administrator in 2008. The couple have a son named Skylar who was born in 2009.

Awards and Recognition :

His movie ‘Extraordinary Rendition’ won the Trailblazer Award at the Edinburgh International Film Festival and was nominated for the Michael Powell Award at the same film festival as also at the British Independent Film Awards.

He was also shortlisted for the Jonathan Vickers Painting Award and won the UAL Research Award at Dublin and Madrid.
His work has been exhibited at various art galleries in London and Singapore.
