Life Leading to R. Kelly :

Dominique Gardner was born on August 4, 1991, in San Diego, California. Her mother, Michelle Kramer then moved with her to Hammond, Indiana and Dominique grew up there. Soon they moved to Country Club Hills, Illinois.
Dominique first got to know R. Kelly and his music when her father took her to his concert when she was about 11 years old. She started idolizing him soon after that.

In 2010, Dominique graduated from high school. Soon after that, she met author Jerhonda Pace on MySpace who told her that she would be able to introduce Dominique to R. Kelly.
R. Kelly was living in the nearby Chicago suburb, Olympia Fields at the time and Dominique started spending time with him when she was just 17 years old. She soon became part of the superstar’s inner circle, though she still lived with her mother.
After completing her high school, Gardner was accepted into a dental hygienist program and graduated from it in 2013. Around that time, she moved in with Kelly when he moved to Atlanta. For the next two years, things were fine and Dominique would visit her mom on a regular basis bringing expensive family gifts with her.

Two years later, in 2015, the visits stopped and later even the phone calls. Dominique was no longer allowed to use the phone and if her mother wanted to talk to her, she would have to call Kelly.
Her mother later found out that Kelly was poisoning Dominique’s and his other girlfriend’s minds against their parents and would beat them if the parents ever tried to contact them.
R. Kelly also had other girlfriends, Azriel Clary and Joycelyn Savage who remain loyal to him to this day.

The Documentary Series, “Surviving R. Kelly” :

Lifetime network green-lit the series “Surviving R. Kelly” in May 2018.
For almost a year, the crew on the project tried to bring forth the stories of these girls affected by R Kelly’s behavior. They also worked with the parents who were desperate to get their daughters back.

They reached out to Dominique’s mom Michelle in May 2018. They found out via TMZ that her daughter was in L.A. Michelle tried contacting Dominique and found out which hotel she was staying at. So she called the producers and said that they can film if she can get a ride to L.A and they help her daughter get out for lunch.
They agreed to meet at lunch the next day but the hotel blocked Michelle’s calls. She got her sister to call Dominique to tell her that she in the hotel’s restroom. Dominique escaped the hotel room and met up with her mom. In the documentary, the mother-daughter duo are seen running out of the hotel together.
Gardner returned to R Kelly a few days after escaping but came back home to her mother in a week’s time after Kelly refused to let her come back home for her little brother’s graduation. Dominique mentioned in an interview that this was the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back and she left Kelly permanently after that. She is now trying to get her life back in order.

Interesting information :

While with R Kelly, Dominique was made to dress in a very “tomboyish” way. The singer did this to try and break her and also wouldn’t let her talk to any other male.
