After doing well in high school, Lisa gained acceptance into the University of Pennsylvania. She has said that the work she did on her high school newspaper and the debating team helped her greatly with her college application.
She graduated from university with a Bachelor of Communications degree and a major in Political Science.
From there, she went on to attend the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University where she earned her Master’s degree.

Lerer’s first big role out of University was as an online journalist with “The National Journal.” She stayed with that company for 1 year before accepting an offer as a reporter for the American Lawyer Magazine.
In September 2006, she began a brief job with Forbes, although she only stayed in that role for a few months.

In May 2007, she began working for The Politico as a staff writer and reporter. She has said that this was the first role that really let her sink her teeth into political reporting, and she is very grateful for that.
Her next role saw her working as a White House Correspondent for Bloomberg News from 2010 to 2014. During this time, she got to travel with former President Barack Obama.
After taking a few months off towards the end of 2014, Lisa resumed her career in March of 2015 & began her role with the Associated Press as their political reporter. She was initially in charge of following the campaign of Hilary Rodham Clinton. However, post-elections, she started work as a general political reporter.

In August 2018, Lisa quit AP and joined the New York Times as a reporter. She is also seen on PBS and CNN as a political analyst during panel discussions.

Lisa was an identified member of the 400-strong progressive journalist community “JournoList” until it was closed in 2010.

The group famously coordinated with each other to ensure that positive messages were being presented about Barack Obama and the Democratic Party, while less favorable things were published about Sarah Palin.
