Caton was raised in Chicago’s Northwest Suburbs and is the daughter of Cathie Atkinson (mother) and horse trainer and horse racing expert, Raymond Metzler (father).
She was one of the two children born to her parents and has a younger sister named Johanna.

When Caton was born, her dad was a schoolteacher who trained a couple of horses on the side. He swiftly moved out of teaching and took a job as farm manager at a farm in Libertyville, Illinois.
Caton’s maternal grandfather Ted Atkinson was a legendary jockey and National Museum of Racing and Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Famer. Ted’s autobiography “All the Way” is also considered one of the best-ever books on horse racing.
Caton was raised in the horse racing world and spent time with her dad at his barn in Arlington, Chicago.

For more than three decades, Caton is married to jockey agent, Doug Bredar and the two split their time between two homes in Hallandale, Florida, and Louisville, Kentucky. They had first met on the job in Arlington. Growing up, Caton always liked the track but had a tough time at school, as neither her grades were so good nor did she like the school crowd. Her dad encouraged her to come to the track, which started her introduction to the world of horses. She even thought she might become a trainer, but those plans got disrupted when she realized how high-pressure the job was.
Eventually, in 1987, Bredar graduated from Knox College in Illinois with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English Writing. She also minored in Secondary English Education and spent her summers working at the horse tracks.

With a career spanning over three decades in radio, TV, and print, Caton is well-respected and has achieved several milestones in her career, including licenses in horse ownership, training, and exercise riding.
She started out working as a Publicist for Misc. Horse Racing & left the company in 2008 after working there for decades.

Before leaving Misc. Horse Racing, she joined ESPN in October 2007 as a reporter and broadcaster but only spent 4 years with the company.
