Hind Hassan was born in Iraq, but her parents moved to the UK to study at Hull University when Hind was three years old.
Growing up in Northern England, Hind considers herself a citizen of both countries.
Hind came back to visit Iraq for the first time since leaving it in 2001, and then again in 2004, by which time it had been drastically changed by the war and by the overthrowing of Saddam Hussein’s regimen.

For her education, Hind attended the University of Leeds from 2003 to 2007, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Medicinal Chemistry. Her dissertation focused on retrosynthesis drug design and organic focused medicinal chemistry.
After graduating from Leeds, she moved south and attended the City University of London from 2008 and 2009, graduating with a Master’s degree in Broadcast Journalism.

In July 2010, Hind started working as a news producer for the Al Jazeera Media Network. She remained there until May 2012 and covered the tumultuous events of 2011’s ‘Arab Spring.’
In October 2011, Hassan was a member of the team that first broke the news of Muammar Gaddafi’s death.
During the same time, Hind worked as a news producer for Sky News where she started in July 2009 and remained until July 2013, transitioning into a role as an international content producer in her last year there. Hind also reported on the events of the Arab Spring for Sky News and, during her stint, she was involved in producing and reporting for Sky News’s international coverage.

While at Sky News, Hind was also involved in reporting on the trial of Julian Assange, the plight of Syrian refugees, and the British terror trials.

In the next stage of his career, Hind moved on to become a correspondent for the lauded show VICE News Tonight, produced by Vice Media and HBO. Since arriving at VICE News, she has continued to tackle complex and potentially dangerous topics from the very midst of where they are occurring at any given time.

Hind has been involved in high-profile stories – investigating the political corruption scandal in Romania, the treatment of Syrian refugees in Hungary, and the ongoing Iraqi humanitarian crisis.
Her team was composed of international journalists that were granted access to a prison in Chechnya that was alleged to be the main centre of detention for gay men in the government’s ‘purge.’

Fluent in Arabic and English, she considers herself equally British and Iraqi.
In an old 2007 interview, Hind had mentioned that she feels as much British as Iraqi. In England, she found it difficult to fit in because of her different looks, but when she goes back to Iraq, she doesn’t really fit in there either. She added that she does feel loyal to both countries.

Hind is trained in Hostile Environment and Emergency First Aid Training (HEFAT), which is a very demanding course of specialised first aid training given to journalists and teams that are due to enter places that are deemed unsafe to civilians.
