Julia was born on December 31, 1987, and is a New York native. Julia remembers being fascinated by the weather as a 3-year-old, having a tree fall on her family home during Hurricane Bob. She grew up on Long Island, NY, and asked her grandmother how hurricanes develop while observing the damage from the storm.
Although Julia admits she was hoping to make important discoveries about tornadoes or hurricanes, with the common assumption that broadcast meteorologists weren’t scientific enough, her Senior year, she transitioned because she accepted that she wasn’t the math and science whiz I thought I was in high school.
She realized that she didn’t have a future in academia and research but would be an asset to a meteorology team.

In 2010, Julia received a B.S. in Atmospheric Science from Cornell University, a rare major for an Ivy League School. Her advice to students is “don’t let your judgment about what you should be doing cloud over (pun intended) what you can do and are good at doing.”

Family, Married Life and Children :

Julia married Mark Leopold on October 10, 2015, in Ithaca, New York. Mark is a freshwater biologist for the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies. He is also a wildlife and fisheries nerd, and a fellow Cornell graduate.

Mark has been the manager of a craft brewery bar and anticipates writing a book about craft beer history.
Together, they have a website titled The Happy Hour Hero, and include blog-style recipes for inebriation.
Julia and Mark have a baby girl named Clara Mae, who was born in September 2017.
