Laura was born in Michigan to parents Rick Velasquez (father) and Tracy Velasquez (mother).
The young Laura was interested in weather right since childhood – even her typical first choice on TV as a kindergartener were weather-related programs!
A self-proclaimed weather nerd, she states at age four, she remembers wanting to be a meteorologist.

A West Michigan native and a graduate of Jenison High School, Laura remembers going to visit the TV8 studio as both a middle school and high school student. Later, she even became a college intern at the studio.
“Weather affects everyone,” Laura states, which is why she became passionate about getting up early morning and being ready and prepared for her viewers.

Laura earned a B.S. in Meteorology, math and Geographic Sciences from Central Michigan University and a M.S. in applied Meteorology from Mississippi State University.
During college, Laura was involved with the student run television station, as a weather forecaster.

Laura worked in Michigan with TV8, where she interned out of college. Her stint there gave her the platform and encouragement to grow as a meteorologist and broadcaster.
She enjoys feeling challenged by the weather, so after 2014 she accepted a job encountering different types of storms at Colorado’s Fox TV in Denver.
In Colorado, she gained new experience forecasting blizzards, severe flooding, and thunderstorms. During this time, she also learned to make graphics, website updates, record live and taped audio, complete print newspaper layouts, and update social media sites professionally. Her ability to translate this information into clear insights for her viewing audience lead her to her current position.

Currently, Velasquez is an award-winning broadcaster for AccuWeather, based in State College, Pennsylvania, analyzing weather patterns and using her graphic media skills. She works with a team of over 10 meteorologists and graphic artists to ensure everything is ready for the early show.

Personal Life and Trivia :

Laura is an endurance athlete, marathoner, and loves to push her physical limits. She has completed seven marathons and has even trained for the ultimate challenge in triathlon – The Ironman.

Her favorite baseball team continues to be Chicago Cubs, and she enjoys traveling and skiing.
Laura has helped to focus the light on the need for gender equality within the meteorological television market, stating only about 11 percent of the weathercasters on evening news slots are women.
