He has a brother, fellow journalist Steve Gaisford.
Richard was raised in Kent, England, and attended the Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys.

After graduating from Tunbridge Wells, Richard attended Falmouth University, where he achieved a degree in Broadcast Journalism.
Richard Gaisford got married to his wife, Emma Hubbard, on July 11, 1998, in Chichester.

Richard made his first foray into the world of broadcast journalism during the times of the Gulf War, covering the radio and television newsdesks for ITN.

He then worked for Westcountry Television as a reporter from 1993 until 1995.
Following that, Richard was a reporter for London Tonight on the London News Network from 1995 to 2000.
In 2000, Richard joined the ranks of his current employer, ITV. He is the chief correspondent for the Good Morning Britain breakfast show and was previously the chief correspondent for Daybreak and GMTV on the same platform.

Gaisford was a lead anchor for GMTV during the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, as well as during the 2010 Football World Cup in South Africa.
