For 19 years I have worked in a security capacity at a federal agency in the United States. This will be my last year of working because I am retiring. I am amazed that the federal government has federal employees as well as contract security managers that lack the basic security knowledge, and management skills to protect the federal facility and federal employees. At best, if there was a grading system the agency that I have worked for would be scored a “D” minus in the performance of protecting federal employees, and the federal buildings. I can only hope that all federal agencies are not being protected like this one.

I am not going to list in this email all that is wrong with the facility, but this is one example of what makes the facility, and employees at risk. Doors are propped open routinely, no one is in the vicinity to make sure that no one enters. I know this to be true, because I have found doors propped opened ,and I myself has enter the facility were the lock have been taken off the gate. Last year while doing an inspection of the facility three males walk into the facility because the lock had been taken off the gate when I approach them they stated that they were looking for another building. Another time an outside contractor had been allowed to drive his car into the facility. The vehicle had not been inspected by security it could have had a boom, or guns in it. Contractors that are not in a security capacity are allowed by federal employees to breech security. The government has a group of employees that are titled Auditors who’s job are to come and inspect government facilities. They do not communicate or ask question about what can be improved in securing the facilities. And security staff receives word filtered down from federal employees and contract managers that we are not to communicate with Auditors. This does not increase the security of the facilities.

I have a suggestion that would improve the security for federal employees and federal facilities. Put together a security team that would go to federal facilities, that would spend days doing the job with the security staff. That way they could gain experience thru working the job duties to make the changes necessary to protect the facilities and employees. There are so many things that need to be corrected at this agency in order to secure the facilities. I would like to address these issues with you or a designated person. Even if necessary, me coming to Washington at my own expense, or meeting with the designated person at the facility. This could jeopardized the last remaining months of my job with this agency but I feel that it is necessary, because the agency as it is today is a soft target for any foreign or domestic terrorist attacks. Especially when security officers receive no training in terrorist attacks, or what to do if terrorist are in the building, or bomb training.
