- Lara is one of the main Sydney-based reporters and panellists for the Australian breakfast television program, ‘Today,’ currently hosted by Georgie Gardner and Deborah Knight. Besides Lara, Sarah Stewart has been the other Sydney based reporter for the show
- ‘Today’ has been broadcast live on the Nine Network since 1982.
- The Nine Network is one of the biggest Australian commercial free-to-air television networks, and also a division of Nine Entertainment Co.
- The headquarters are located in Willoughby, a suburb located near the North shore of Sydney.
Keeping it Cool :
- In one segment of ‘Today,’ Lara found herself in an awkward position after a case of mistaken identity. In her news update after 7.30 am, she was producing a story revolving around the NSW Police Band, which did a cover of a very popular Christmas carol to warn citizens about scams over the festive period.
- The camera was supposed to cut to the Detective Superintendent so Lara could ask her questions about the song and whether the catchy tune will help the public remember the lyrics, but instead, the camera cut to another guest in a different studio who came in to speak about and discuss road safety.
- Instead of making an even more awkward deal out of it or exacerbating things further, Lara kept her cool and calmly replied “Okay, well we’ll come back to the Detective Superintendent for more on that. Back to you, Deb…Thank You.”
- A Channel Nine spokesman blamed the mix-up on a simple human error; the road-safety expert’s name was Lyn, a very similar sounding name to the guest who they were actually meant to be cutting to, called Linda.
Fraser vs Vella :
- In one segment, Lara had a heated argument with Queensland senator Fraser Anning, regarding his all-be-it controversial appearance at a far-right rally.
- The dispute started when the senator was trying to defend his appearance at the rally against African gangs in Melbourne.
- The rally itself cost the Australian taxpayer a substantial amount. It was heavily criticised by both media and the public, as numerous members were seen proudly holding up N**i salutes.
- Fraser attempted to defend the event, arguing it was ‘no racist rally’ and that the persons involved were ‘decent Australian people who showed their disgust for what the Australian government has done.’
- Lara retorted, asking how people throwing up N**i salutes could be considered as ‘decent Australians.’
- Fraser’s position was not helped as he stood right by UPF founder Blair Cottrell, who had previously described the Jewish community as ‘a bunch of parasites’ in an interview earlier that year.
Interesting Facts and Trivia :
- A comical live-on-air moment of Lara was when she accidentally swallowed a fly while speaking and had to ask the camera to cut back to the studio.
- Till 2019, Lara was still on her ‘P-plates’. ‘P-plates’ refer to the plastic sticker drivers place on their vehicles to indicate that they only have a provisional driver’s licence.
