Introduction :
Dr. Bhavna Vaswani is mostly known for being the spouse of the famous director Manoj “M. Night” Shyamalan. A psychologist by trade, she now runs the M. Night Shyamalan Foundation that she and her husband created.
Family Background, Parents and Marriage :
- Born in India, Bhavna was later raised in Hong Kong, where she attended private high school. Her parents then moved to the U.S. in 1986.
- The young Bhavna was immediately interested in attending university, but her mother was not enthusiastic about that as she herself believed in a more traditional approach.
- To her mother, being too educated could hurt her chances of attracting a potential husband. However, her father came to her defense and supported her, believing in the value of education for girls.
- She met Manoj in University & knew that she wanted to spend her life with her.
- Her parents did not approve at first, both because of his major (film) and also because she was expected to have an arranged marriage.
- However, she stood her ground, and they were married in 1993. They now live in Pennsylvania and have three daughters – Salekha Shyamalan, Shivani Shyamalan, and Ishani Shyamalan.

- Dr. Vaswani graduated from New York University.
- She then earned a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Bryn Mawr College.
Profession, Jobs and Net Worth
- Dr. Vaswani put her undergraduate psychology degree to work in a clinic shortly after being married, counseling young sexual abuse victims. Back then, she was the main breadwinner of the family while her husband worked on his screenplays.
- Once Manoj started gaining financial success & completed her Ph.D., she threw herself into a new project. The couple has been consistently funding the work of education-focused nonprofit groups around the world through the M. Night Shyamalan Foundation.
- Bhavna is the co-founder and Vice President & is responsible for selecting and vetting the nonprofit groups and recruiting a suitable candidate to oversee the project.
- One example of these groups is located in Liberia. An overwhelming number of Liberian girls are forced into body trade because they have no job skills, no money, and no education.
- To help change that, she partnered with an organization called More Than Me and has set up a free school for Liberian girls. the M. Night Shyamalan Foundation is currently partnered with similar groups in six countries worldwide.
- This drive and mission to provide educational opportunities for those in the poorest, most desperate parts of the world—especially girls, can be linked back to the encouragement her father gave her to pursue her own education.
Interesting Facts, Height and Trivia :
- For his wedding proposal, Manoj was very discreet & merely slipped a note into her fortune cookie asking her to marry him.
- She is known to be a zumba instructor in her downtime.

I truly love what Bhavna does especially for girls’ education. I grew up in India to very poor parents who could not afford to send us five sisters to school. I only wish more people could help other underprivileged children in the world
