Chelsea Winstanley was born in 1976 in New Zealand to parents John, (father, a businessman by profession), and Cherry, (mother, a psychotherapist by profession). She is of Ngai Te Rangi and Ngati Ranginui descent (ethnicity).
She grew up in Mount Maunganui, a suburb of Tauranga, alongside her two elder siblings.

Chelsea’s parents divorced when she was seven years old, and her elder siblings also left home. Chelsea remained with her father, John, until he remarried. She then moved to Auckland to live with her mother, Cherry.
Chelsea attended Auckland Girls’ Grammar School.
When she was nineteen, Chelsea had an abortion but then fell pregnant again at twenty and had her first son, Maia, just a few days before she turned twenty-one. Her partner left her when Maia was only three months old, and Chelsea had to depend on state benefits as a single mother.

When she was twenty-two, Chelsea moved in with a friend, another mother with two sons, and they both attended Waikato University in Hamilton, New Zealand. They studied communications there.
Chelsea was involved in a serious car crash that left her with a leg broken in three parts. She had to spend six months re-learning how to walk…she spent this time back at home in Mount Maunganui.
After that, Chelsea transferred her degree from Waikato University to the Auckland University of Technology, where she finished her degree.

She met the man who would become her husband, Taika Waititi, when she was in her mid-20s, but they only got together in the late 2000s, after reconnecting on the set of his movie Boy.
Chelsea married Taika Waititi in 2012. She has two daughters with him, Te Hinekāhu (born in 2012) and Matewa (born in 2015).
Taika and Chelsea have been separated since 2018.

In 2005, she worked as the co-producer and director of Tame Iti – The Man Behind the Moko.
Chelsea then directed, produced, and narrated Butt Why? in 2006.
In 2011, she co-produced the film Saving Grace – Te Whakarauora Tangata, a documentary about domestic violence created by her idol Merata Mita, who sadly passed away during production in 2010.

That same year, Chelsea produced the short film Meathead.
In 2014, she produced What We Do In The Shadows, a film co-directed and co-written by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement.
In 2017, Chelsea directed and wrote the film Waru, and in 2018 she produced a documentary about Merata Mita with Mita’s son, titled Merata: How Mum Decolonised the Screen.

Chelsea also produced Taika Waititi’s film Jojo Rabbit.
