Introduction :
Mr. Deepak Virendra Kochhar is the husband of the famous Mrs. Chanda Kochhar, the Managing Director and Chief Executive officer of ICICI Bank. In March 2018, Deepak came in the spotlight when CBI launched a preliminary enquiry into him & Videocon MD Venugopal Dhoot.
Business, Career and Net Worth :
- Deepak V. Kocchar has earned a Master’s degree in Finance from the prestigious Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, which is part of the Mumbai University.
- He then further went ahead and earned a degree in Advanced Management Program (AMP) from Boston’s Harvard Business School.
- Mr. Kochhar has over 20 years of management and business experience in the financial services as well as the renewable energy sector.
- He is currently the Chief Executive Officer and the Director of Nupower Renewables Private Limited, which he founded himself on December 24, 2008.
- To date, NuPower has manufactured 2.05 Mega Watts wind turbines of German technology from wind to energy GmbH. They have also developed their own projects using these technologies.
Personal Life, Parents and Family Details :
- Mr. Deepak is married to Mrs. Chanda Kochhar, who was also his batchmate at their MBA College at Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies.
- Initially, they were just friends in college, but as soon as they both graduated, it was Mr. Kochhar who proposed to his wife for marriage.
- At that time, Chanda had recently joined ICICI Bank as a management trainee & given the task to oversee the financial status of many big projects. Because of that, she had to decline his proposal as she couldn’t give him the time for personal commitments.
- However, two years later, Chanda herself asked Deepak, to which he readily agreed.
- Together, they have two children; one son and one daughter.
Children :
- Deepak & Chanda’s son, Arjun Kochhar, is into sports, whereas their daughter Aarti Kochhar is an engineering graduate and married their family friend’s son Aditya Kaji on November 30, 2016.
- Their son-in-law is the son of Sameer Kaji and Radhika Kaji. Sameer Kaji was the CMD of the packaging company Ras Propack Lamipack, which later merged with Essel Propack in 2012. The Kaji family is known to be close friends of the Ambanis. Even Aditya is currently working for Ambani’s Jio telecom company.
- Both Aarti and Aditya had known each other from before and worked and interned together at the start of their careers.
- But, though their marriage was a love marriage, both their families had known each other from before.
- In 1998, Sameer Kaji’s firm had become financially sick as per their history mentioned in Edelweiss’ website. It was ICICI limited, under Mrs. Kochhar’s leadership, which took up the mantle as their operating agency to finalise the rehabilitation package for the company. Since then, the Kajis and the Kochhars have had close ties with each other.
Interesting Facts and Trivia :
- Aside from being an ardent supporter of his wife, whom he encouraged to achieve tremendously in her professional field, and being an entrepreneur himself, Deepak is also a Squash Player and has won 3 National Squash titles.
- In March 2018, the CBI had launched a PE into Deepak’s company NuPower. Allegedly, it had received 64 crore rupees worth of loan from Venugopal Dhoot’s full owned entity. Venugopal is the founder of Electronics firm Videocon. Soon after, Venugopal had received over 3000+ Crores worth of loan from ICICI bank. ICICI has strongly denied the Chanda was involved in any quid-pro-quo.
