Early Life and Education :
- Before Michael, a Saskatchewan native, became a chef, he went to school.
- At first, he had plans to become a doctor. He studied science at a small university in Canada, then took a break from school to play semi-pro hockey in Japan.
- While in Japan, Michael gained a whole new understanding of the world of cooking.
- In 1985, he returned to Canada.
- He applied to the Culinary Management program at George Brown College in Toronto, Canada, but was told that the program was full. Unfazed, he called and convinced an admissions worker to let him in anyway.
- In 1987, Michael graduated from George Brown and immediately began working on his own restaurant endeavors before finally becoming a professor himself.
Personal Life : Life as Anna Olson Husband
- In 1995, Michael met his current wife Anna through Canada’s culinary world.
- Anna, originally born in Atlanta, Georgia, moved to Toronto at a young age with her family. She spent most of her life there before returning to the States to go to Johnson & Wales University.
- After she graduated, Anna returned and met Olson through mutual colleagues.
- Michael first fell in love with Anna after they went out to get breakfast and shared a muffin. She asked for the bottom part of the muffin because she didn’t like the top, which happened to be Michael’s favorite. At that moment, Michael felt like he had met his other half.
- In 1999, the two got married, adopted a beagle named Oscar, and the couple began their rise as a culinary power couple.
Solo Career and Net Worth :
- Michael began his post-college culinary career in 1988 at Coco Lezonne, where he worked as a chef for one year before moving on to The Liberty in Toronto.
- In 1991, he became the executive chef at Ontario’s new restaurant Navy Blues, where he stayed for three years before becoming the chef and co-owner at On The Twenty, another Ontario restaurant.
- During these formative years, he became an expert with meats and wines.
- In 2001, Michael stepped away from the hectic life of a restaurant chef and began teaching at the Niagara Culinary Institute. He continues teaching to this day.
Work as a Culinary Dream Team :
- After Michael’s wife began garnering fame as a pastry chef, the two of them opened Olson Foods, a grocery store, and bakery, in 2004. The store focused on fresh ingredients and on helping customers learn how to pair ingredients together for cooking.
- In 2008, they opened their second location.
- Eventually, the couple sold their businesses so that Anna could focus on her cooking shows with the Food Network and Michael could focus on teaching.
- The two frequently travel to Asia to cook and study, but are at home cooking in Toronto when they are not traveling.
