Blackwell is admitted to be a lawyer in the U.S. Court of Appeals, the U.S. District Court, and the District of Minnesota.

Jerry’s career began in 1986 after he received a job offer from the Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi Law Firm in Minnesota. After two decades at the firm, Blackwell decided it was time for him to branch out and build his own business.
In 2006, Jerry joined forces with late attorney Martin ‘Skip’ Burkey to found Blackwell Burke P.A. Currently, he serves as the firm’s Head Attorney, Chairman, and CEO.

Throughout the years, Blackwell Burke P.A. has worked on hundreds of cases, representing several companies across 47 states in the U.S. and multiple countries worldwide.
The company has a wide range of high-profile clients, including the likes of General Mills, 3M, Shell Oil, IBM, and Cargill.
Jerry is also a founder of an organization called the Minnesota Association of Black Lawyers (MABL).

In June 2020, Jerry represented the late Max Mason. Max, a former African-American circus worker, was granted a Posthumous Pardon after he was given a wrongful conviction in 1920 for rape. Mr. Mason was sentenced to 30 years in jail and granted conditional parole in 1925, but his colleagues, who were also falsely accused, were publicly lynched.
In 2021, Jerry returned to the spotlight after being asked to represent the prosecution team in the trial of Officer Derek Chauvin. Derek was found guilty of murder after kneeling on the neck of George Floyd, a black man. This incident in May 2020 sparked worldwide outrage and protests for racial justice.

When he is not working, Jerry loves to spend time at his farmhouse, which is located in Jordan, Minnesota. There, he farms honeybees and looks after a goat he called Beyoncé and several barn cats.
