Introduction :

Amal Kassir is a young activist using education and spoken word poetry to speak up about injustices surrounding the treatment of the Islamic community.

By growing up with mixed-race parents, a white mother and an Arab father, Amal had a unique cultural experience that allows her to empathize with those struggling to balance their religious identity with their American one.
Kassir is now in her early twenties and continues to live with her family.

Amal, born and raised in Denver, Colorado, decided to stay close to home for college, & started attending the University of Colorado Denver.
Unsatisfied with their offered majors, however, she decided to create her own to ensure that she took the courses she wanted to take.
Her degree combines child psychology and education. It is a major stepping stone to continuing her activism work. She hopes to work with refugee children and develop educational curricula that their communities can continue when she leaves.

She is on track to graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in “community programming in social psychology,” her own major, very soon.

Early Jobs :

Before ever reciting poetry on stage, Amal worked in her family’s Syrian restaurant.
There, she worked odd jobs and mainly waitressed. She continues to do so when she has the time.

Spoken Word & Poetry :

Amal had been drawn to poetry at a young age for its ability to capture an audience’s attention and hold it for several minutes. Viewers process spoke a word in a way that’s different from processing a song or reading a chapter on their own. It’s intimate and emotional and will lead people to look at issues in a new light.
When she began writing her own poetry, she focused on herself and her own identity struggles as a Syrian-American, and quickly realized she could tell a much larger story and shed light on the issues surrounding Syria.
In 2013, after performing poetry for quite some time, Kassir attended the Minor Disturbance Poetry Slam held at the Mercury Café in Denver.

There, she went on to win the contest, and her poem went viral on YouTube.
Since then, Kassir has performed in over 10 countries and has been invited to events all over the world.

Bright Success at a Young Age :

Although still a college student herself, Amal has been invited on numerous occasions to give lectures to both organizations and classes.
She is currently using her education to develop workshops aimed at empowering young people through writing.
Poetry allowed her to find her own voice, and she wanted writing to be a tool for others to do the same.

Through her workshops, she runs a project called More Than Metaphors.
This project focuses on displaced Syrian children and uses community initiatives to create educational opportunities for them, with an emphasis on writing and expression.
