Smart is married to now BBC producer, Steven. They met while he was still working as a technical operator in BBC. Steven is two years older than Gillian.
She gave birth to a baby boy, Michael James, in 2011 at the Wishaw General Hospital.

She welcomed another child – a baby girl into the family in March 2016.
