- Johnson’s father was in the military. She spent some time in Europe before growing up in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
- She actually credits her love of weather to her relationship with her father, since that was something they spoke about regularly.
- She is married and currently lives in Howard County, Maryland, with her husband & three children. All her children were born in the 1990s.
- Education : Johnson earned a degree in Atmospheric Science from the University of North Carolina at Asheville (UNCA) in 1989.
TV Career, Job, Salary and Net Worth :
- Very early in her career, Johnson interned at a TV station in Tennessee. Following this internship she became an apprentice at The Weather Channel which allowed her to strengthen her on-air presentation skills.
- She left TWC to head to the Fox station WBFF in Baltimore, Maryland, then on to New York’s top-rated WABC & back to Baltimore at WMAR.
- In 1999, Veronica headed to WRC-TV NBC4 as a broadcast meteorologist in the afternoon & also had supporting roles as a show host and producer for auto shows.
- In addition to WRC, she reported on 103.5 WTOP Radio and also hosted America This Week, a weekly 30-minute news show.
- After 17 years at WRC-TV, Johnson moved on to WJLA ABC7 & NewsChannel8 in Washington, DC and took over the station’s morning meteorologist position.
Interesting Facts, Height and Trivia :
- Johnson actually learned about weather in High School from an ex-Air Force pilot science teacher who taught students about the atmosphere and flying and even how to prepare flight plans. The teacher encouraged Johnson to consider pursuing meteorology or aeronautical engineering.
- Initially, she had a fear of public speaking and used to avoid giving presentations, even at times failing assignments because of it. However, when she interned at the TV station in Tennessee, she worked with someone who was around her age and he helped her get over her fears.
- She is a semi-pro photographer and loves to shoot outdoor photography. She has a website under the name “Eyewall Photography” and it features many pictures with a nature theme.
- Johnson used to be on the track and field team in college, and is still very active to this day. She enjoys running, and also more adventurous sports like rock climbing and even accelerated freefall skydiving.
- She is an ardent supporter of several area youth development programs, including “Environmentors” and “The Sister Program.” She is also involved in many other associations like the American Meteorological Society (AMS), DC’s Joint Center Advisory Committee on Climate Change and NAACP.
- Johnson says that being a black woman in a white male-dominated business influenced her early broadcasts, making her more reserved as she felt like she had to prove her credibility.
- She is now much more open and speaks to women about the challenges she faced during her career. She even received the Women’s Pioneer Award from the DC Female Firefighters in 2006.
