Ilkka Paananen was born on June 16, 1978, in Piikkiö, Finland, which is a couple of hours west of the Finnish capital, Helsinki.
Both his parents were teachers.
He has a younger brother, Juha Paananen, who was one of the founders of another mobile gaming start-up, Nonstop Games. Juha is two years younger than Ilkka.

For his education, Ilkka attended the Helsinki University of Technology (TKK) from 1998 to 2009, ending his studies with a Master of Science.

Early Career as a Business Founder :

With little to no background in programming or game design, in June 2000, Ilkka became the CEO and co-founder of Sumea, a company specializing in game development.

Sumea was acquired by Digital Chocolate in June of 2004. Ilkka remained at the company in its new iteration, first as Managing Director (July 2004 to December 2006), then as President of Studios (December 2006 to 2009), and ultimately as President, from January 2010 to June 2010.
In June 2009, Ilkka became an investor in Uplause Ltd, a company that develops and markets social games, providing interactive entertainment to the consumer. He is also the chairman of the board.
