She married her husband, Joseph H. Marty, a nuclear proliferation specialist at the Department of State, on September 5, 1992.
Beth grew up in the state of New York and went to Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda, Maryland, and Mamaroneck High School in Westchester County, NY.

She then attended Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors in English and Literature.
