Colwin was appointed the New York State Division of Human Rights’ Administrative Law Judge by Governor Michael Pataki in 1996. She held the position for nine years, in addition to working as a New York Law firm partner.

When Mercedes worked as a partner at a NY regional law firm, she focused mainly on cases that had been filed under state discrimination and federal laws and presided over more than 2000 cases.
Throughout her career, her specialty has been defense & she has tried multiple cases successfully in multiple jurisdictions all across the USA.
