Born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She has a younger brother named Daniel.
Amy’s mother arrived in the US at the age of 18 with only the clothes she wore. She self-taught her English by watching daytime soaps, showcasing relentless hard work and remarkable determination. Despite numerous sacrifices to support the family, her dedication remained unwavering.
For her education, Amy attended the Minnesota State University Moorhead. In 2001, she graduated from there with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mass Communications.

Outside of her professional endeavors, Amy is a married woman, devoted to her family. Since July 2006, she is happily married to her husband Chris Dowling, a special agent with the U.S. Department of State. Early on in their relationship, Amy used to travel over 3,000 miles every week to be with Chris, who was based in Miami at the time. Despite the distance, Amy remained committed to her job at KARE-TV while navigating her relationship with Chris.
Close to two decades into their marriage, Chris and Amy now have two children – Daughter Elise (born in June 2008) and son Christian (born in October 2010). The family enjoys spending quality time together, engaging in activities such as watching games in stadiums and traveling.

Her departure from her position at KARE-TV occurred in 2008. At the time, Amy was balancing her career with family responsibilities, having recently become a parent and splitting her time between the Twin Cities and the East Coast, where her husband worked. Following her departure from KARE, Amy and her family lived in Washington D.C. and Ecuador before returning to Minnesota a few years later.
After her professional hiatus to focus on her children and family, Amy returned to the media landscape in 2013, joining BringMeTheNews as the Chief Content Officer. BringMeTheNews was a local news aggregator founded by her former colleague Rick Kupchella.
