Laura was born and raised in Corcoran, Minnesota, just outside of Minneapolis. When she took her job at KARE 11, it felt as if she were coming back home.
She is currently married to her husband Bryan Piatt for the last several years. Bryan is a former TV anchor, who is now a campaigner for mental health and hosts the podcast “Take What Serves, Leave the Rest”. The podcast has a 5-star rating on Apple Podcasts.

Laura went to college at the University of Wisconsin Madison, where she studied the ocean and atmosphere.
As a child, she had wanted to be a geologist but changed her mind when she began learning about storm systems. From then on, the weather had always fascinated her, and she liked the idea of having a job that allowed her never to experience the exact same day twice.

She enrolled in 2002, then went abroad in a program called Semester at Sea, where students stay on a boat to complete their studies. While abroad, she visited many European countries, such as France, Norway, Russia, Iceland, Ireland, and Spain.
In 2006, she graduated with a B.S. in Atmospheric and Oceanic Science and began her first job immediately afterward.

Betker’s first meteorologist position began at Weather Eye Radio Network in June 2006, where she reported over the radio each day.
She quit that job nearly two years later in March of 2008, and wouldn’t have another meteorologist position for two years.
After moving to Lima, Ohio, in 2010, Betker went back to meteorology and took a position with WLIO-TV as both a reporter and a meteorologist.
