- Brett Okamoto was born in Windsor, Colorado, where he was also raised.
- He attended Windsor High School and graduated in 2004. During his last year of high school, he wrote for two newspapers: The Greeley Tribune and The Coloradoan.
- Brett then went on to attend the Colorado State University, where he studied journalism. After he graduated with a degree in Journalism and technical communication in 2008, Brett started becoming interested in actually making sports journalism his career. Actually, he had been interested in sports journalism since he was in fifth grade.
- While at Colorado State University, he got on the team of the student newspaper, The Rocky Mountain Collegian. He remained on the newspaper team throughout his time there and was even the sports editor during his junior year.
- Brett is married to his wife, Jessica Detterer. They have a son together, Kamryn, who was born in July 2020.

- After his graduation from college, Brett spent two and a half months in New York City as an intern at Sports Illustrated. During his time there, he was a fact-checker for the magazine.
- Following his internship in New York City, Brett moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where he worked as a reporter for the Las Vegas Sun, one of two daily newspapers serving the Las Vegas Valley & owned by Greenspun Media Group. Here, he covered many sporting events there but started reporting on the emerging Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). - Brett voted that “Tony Ferguson vs. Anthony Pettis” was the fight of the year in 2018. The fight itself only lasted two rounds & was quite one-sided, with Ferguson landing nearly three times as many strikes as Pettis.
