- Crystal was born in 1976 in Oklahoma, where she was also raised.
- Her childhood was a difficult one because she was horrifically abused by her stepfather until she was twelve years old. Because of her trauma, Crystal became addicted to drugs as a teenager and also underwent an abortion.
- Her first marriage ended in divorce by the time she turned twenty-one years old. She has two children from that relationship, a son and a daughter.
- In 2004, she married her current husband, Virgil. Crystal went on to have another two children with Virgil, a girl and a boy who are twins.
- In December 2009, Crystal had to have a routine surgery that triggered huge complications resulting in her heart ceasing to beat for nine minutes. During those nine minutes, Crystal claims to have seen heaven and met God. This changed her outlook on life and on faith completely. She has stated that hearing her mother Bonnie’s voice calling for her made her turn away from heaven.

- Crystal was a schoolteacher until the birth of her twins. Her time off made her realize the necessity to put her experience in writing, and she worked on her very first book, Waking Up in Heaven: A True Story of Brokenness, Heaven, and Life Again, which was released by Howard Books in April 2013. Crystal collaborated with bestselling author Alex Tresniowski.
- Waking up in Heaven made the New York Times bestseller list and it has over nine hundred ratings on Amazon.
- Crystal’s second book, Chasing Heaven: What Dying Taught Me About Living, was released in March 2016 by Howard Books. This follow-up book is a testament to Crystal’s journey since that fateful day in the hospital and on how dying made her live her life more meaningfully than ever. She collaborated with Alex Tresniowski again during the writing process.

Vielen Dank für deine Geschichte. Auch ich habe einen Kindesmißbrauch erlebt. Ich war 2 !/2 Jahre alt. Der sexuelle Mißbrauch dauerte etwa 2 1/2 Jahre. Danach ist mein Vater mit dem Messer auf mich, auf meine Schwester und meine Mutter und Großmutter losgegangen. Ich war 6 Jahre alt. Das dauert 2-3 Jahre. Und vieles mehr.
Ich hatte eine schlimme Kindheit. Von Gott fühlte ich mich verlassen. Als ich 12 Jahre alt war, plante ich jeden Tag meinen Selbstmord. Die Kirche in die gehen wollte, war verschlossen. Ich irrte durch die Straßen und war in höchsten Maße Selbstmord gefährdet. Meinen Ersten Selbstmordversuch hatte ich mit 19 Jahren.
Im Januar 1985 starb der Bruder meiner Großmutter. Ich war sehr depressiv und dachte er darf sterben und ich darf nicht sterben. Ich hatte in der folgenden Nacht einen Traum.
Ich saß im Auto von meiner Schwester und bin gestorben. Ich ging durch einen Tunnel und am Ende war Licht. Ich bin der Eltern von meiner Großmutter begegnet. Sie haben mich durch Räume geführt. Das war einfach schön, schön, schön. Sie haben mir erzählt wie gut es ihnen geht. Und haben mich zum Tunnel zurückbegleitet. Ich habe auf der Erde noch eine Aufgabe zu erfüllen. So lange die nicht erfüllt ist, darf ich nicht wiederkommen.
Dieser Traum hat mich mein ganzes bisheriges Leben begleitet. Heute arbeite ich ohne Geld zu bekommen für das Stolpersteinprojekt für die Opfer aus dem Holocaust. Und ich habe meine Familiengeschichte aufgearbeitet. Auch ich habe mehrere Familienmitglieder durch den Holocaust verloren.
