Despite his personal successes, he is most commonly known for being married to the versatile award-winning actress, Alfre Woodard.

Roderick M. Spencer was born on April 13, 1958, in New York. He is the youngest of three kids born to parents, Louisa (mother) and Duncan (father). His older sisters are named Leslie & Louisa. Roderick also has three older step-siblings from his dad’s first marriage : Margaret, Duncan and Josephine.
After being introduced by his college drama professor, Roderick married actress Alfre Woodard in 1983.

Defying the odds for most celebrity couples, they have been married for over three decades.
They have two adopted children, a daughter named Mavis and a son named Duncan.

From 1971-1976, Roderick attended the college preparatory St. Mark School in Southborough, Massachusetts. He refers to his five years at the school as the “most vivid, desperate, and strange time in [his] life.”

At one time, Roderick was teaching screenwriting and directing at Emerson College’s Los Angeles campus, and was a visiting lecturer at his alma mater, Colorado, College, teaching writing for performance.
He was also on the board of the nonprofit organization The Unusual Suspects, which brings theater training to youth in foster group homes, gang intervention programs, and juvenile detention centers in Los Angeles.

As a white man who has African-American kids and is married to an African-American woman, Roderick is especially interested in social issues that relate to racial injustice. In addition to regularly speaking out on social media, he was a founding member of the organization Artists for a New South Africa, which at one time aimed to fight apartheid.
After a brief stint in acting in the 1980s (including an appearance on “L.A. Law”) Roderick moved to the other side of the camera.
In 2001, he became a writer, producer and part owner at Miss Maglashan Productions in Santa Monica, California.
