Jonathan Merritt was born on August 4, 1982, in Atlanta, Georgia, to parents James Merritt (father, a reverend and the senior pastor of Cross Pointe Church), and Teresa Merritt (mother).
Jonathan is the middle child of three: he has two brothers, James Merritt and Joshua Merritt, and through them, he is the uncle to four nephews.
Raised in Atlanta, Jonathan followed the Southern Baptist doctrine of his family.

He is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse.
From 2000 to 2004, Jonathan attended Liberty University, an evangelical university in Lynchburg, Virginia. While there, he studied for a Bachelor’s of Science degree.
