Maximo Alvarez, the founder of privately-owned Sunshine Gasoline Distributors, is a businessman, who gained fame for delivering a passionate, emotional speech at the Republican National Convention, held in August 2020.
A hard conservative, in his speech, Maximo warned against the so-called illusion or false promise of socialism. He raised points about allegedly false claims that some prominent Democrats had once promised, such as providing free healthcare and other facilities for the poor. He also credited the USA for helping him build his successful career and giving him the opportunity to pursue his dreams.

Maximo Alvarez was born in 1948, in Havana, Cuba, to Spanish parents. Despite being born in communist Cuba, he has spent half of his adult life in the United States.
First, Alvarez’s parents moved to Cuba from Spain and later to the US, when Alvarez was 13.

He is now married and to his lovely spouse, Esther Lucrecia Alvarez. It has been 3-4 decades that they have been together.
The couple has three children – Sandra, Maximo Recardo, and Eduardo. Two of the kids, Sandra and Maximo, are working in the family business Sunshine Gasoline Distributors, while Eduardo is studying Mechanical Engineering.
Maximo has completed his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Florida State University.

After completing his Master’s degree, Maximo entered the oil industry in 1971 and began his career as an employee of the Cities Service Company (Citgo).
After a few years, Alvarez took the opportunity to purchase four gas stations in South Florida, created the firm Sunshine Gasoline, and then became a distributor for the company he previously worked for (Citgo Petroleum).

Sunshine Gasoline is now one of the biggest distributors in Florida, supplying over 500 gas stations and controlling over 350 of them. According to their website, the brands which they work with include Shell, Chevron, Exxon, Mobil, Marathon, and Citgo.
On account of his modest beginnings, Maximo strongly believes in supporting both society and the business community. He was highly active in the Florida Petroleum Marketers Association. He was even elected Chairman of the Board in 2000 and joined the Hall of Fame in 2005.
