Personal Life and Profile :

• Sutapa Sikdar is an Indian film and dialogue writer. She is the wife of one of the finest actors in Indian cinema, Irrfan Khan. Irrfan Khan passed away at the age of 53 on April 29, 2020.
• Sutapa was born in an Assamese Hindu family in Delhi. For her education, she did her primary schooling from Kendriya Vidyalaya in Andrews Ganj, New Delhi.
• In 1984, she joined the prestigious National School of Drama (NSD), New Delhi and graduated in 1987. She studied acting but was also keen on becoming a story and screenplay writer, which actually turned out to be her profession later on.

Marriage to Irfan Khan : 

• On February 23, 1995, Sutapa married actor Irrfan Khan. The marriage was just a simple court marriage. Irfan was her fellow graduate from National School of Drama (NSD), New Delhi in the year 1987. They fell in love when they were both enrolled in the course.
• In their family, they also have two sons, Babil Khan and Ayaan Khan. Currently, she lives with her husband and two sons at Aksa Beach in Mumbai.

TV Career : 

• Since both Irrfan and Sutapa were looking for employment after their graduation, they decided not to marry until they get to do some work. They worked together from 1993 to 1997 for TV shows.
• One of the most popular among the shows was ‘Banegi Apni Baat’ in which Irrfan was one of the actors, and Sutapa was the screenplay writer. Irrfan was so particular about the storyline and screenplay that he made her rewrite about 11 episodes of the show!
• In 2000, she wrote an episode, ’Alvida,’ for an Indian television series- ‘Star Bestsellers.’ This show was a good platform for young and upcoming writers and directors. Her husband, Irrfan Khan, directed the episode Sutapa wrote.

Film and Movies Career : 

• In 1996, Sutapa wrote the dialogues for an Indian musical drama film ‘Khamoshi: The Musical,’ which starred Nana Patekar, Manisha Koirala, Salman Khan, Seema Biswas and Helen. This film marked Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s directorial debut.
• In 2003, she wrote the dialogues for Padam Kumar’s ‘Supari’ and in 2005 for Sanjay Dutt starrer, ’Shabd.’ She also wrote the dialogues for Sujoy Ghosh’s super hit film ‘Kahaani’ which was released in 2012.
• She entered the field of film production in the year 2016. ‘Madari’ was her debut movie as a film producer, which was an Indian social-thriller film starring her husband Irrfan Khan, and directed by Nishikant Kamat. She knew that Irrfan would not accept a weak story and screenplay, so she worked on the story of the film along with another writer for more than a year before approaching him. Irrfan eventually liked the story and agreed to work in ‘Madari’ right away.

Sutapa has been Irrfan’s support system for more than two decades now. She has not only established a good career for herself but had also played a crucial role in Irrfan Khan’s stupendous success. According to Irrfan, Sutapa is his biggest critic and has a better understanding of his performance as an actor.
